For music enthusiasts who thrive on insider knowledge and detailed music conversation, WhoSampled would be just their cup of tea. It's basically an online community for discovering and discussing sampled music, remixes and cover songs. WhoSampled has partnered with The Echo Nest to provide the WhoSampled API that allows developers to access and integrate its functionality with other applications.
APIs serve up a lot of valuable data and resources, but the most valuable API currency right now is social data, and specifically public data from Twitter. APIs are essential in not just accessing this social data, but also delivering meaning extracted from this firehose of social data.
At the beginning of 2011 we reported that Collect had decided to drop it's API in order to change their offering to something more profitable. But now ReadWriteWeb have reported the disappointing demise of Collecta. This has the potential of being the first big failure of a well funded real-time web focused company, so questions need to be asked about why this happened and why Collecta weren't successful. Back in January of this year we asked "Is It Finally the End for Real-time Search Engines?" and it now looks like that very question is being raised again.
